Crowdrise

The 2011 SI Alternative Spring Break program did something quite exciting as a fundraising initiative this year... ASB students were the first academic unit of the University of Michigan to experiment with fundraising using the social networking site Crowdrise.com. In this pilot, SI students promoted their ASB projects and used the power of their own social networks to spread the word about SI ASB and raise funds for the program. In addition to traditional fundraising methods, the Fundraising Committee supplemented them with an online component that combines our academic expertise in social computing with the growing success of micro-donations. And it paid off...

SI ASB students and their networks raised $11,031 on Crowdrise alone this year!

Spread the word about ASB through your own contacts, by posting the ASB Crowdrise URL (www.crowdrise.com/siasb2011) on your favorite social networking sites. It's a great way to encourage enterprising students in their volunteer efforts and support a very worthwhile program. If you feel inclined, please donate! We need to raise over $30,000 to support ASB each year.

SI ASB Penny Wars

2011 Penny Wars - February 7-11, 2011
SI Student Lounge, North Quad

UPDATE! Congratulations to the Faculty, Staff, and PhD Students of SI, who took first place in the 2011 Penny Wars with a count of $860.11! Total donations for the 2011 Penny Wars were $3,151.58... the most ever raised during this annual event. A big thanks to all of our donors!

SI specializations, faculty, and staff will be pitted against each other to donate the most amount of money. Pennies and checks* count as positive amounts; silver coins and dollar bills count against a group. Start saving your pennies!

You can follow the Penny Wars progress at SI ASB 2011 Penny Wars Update. View previous years' Penny Wars Results at Penny Wars

Rules of Engagement:
Offense - Put pennies or checks* in the container corresponding with your SI affiliation.
Defense - Put silver change and bills in the containers of your opponents to detract from their totals.
*Checks made out to the "University of Michigan" are counted as positive.

Virtual donations can also be made via UM SI ASB Crowdrise.

The battle lines have been drawn. The combatants are:

  • ARM and PI - Archives and Records Management; Preservation of Information
  • HCI, IAR and SC - Human-Computer Interaction; Information Analysis and Retrieval; Social Computing
  • IPOL and IEM - Information Policy; Information Economics for Management
  • LIS (with K-12 school media) - Library and Information Services
  • CI - Community Informatics and Tailored
  • Faculty, staff, and Ph.D. students

Here's how it works:

  • Visit the UM SI ASB Crowdrise Team Page.
  • Check out the students' team pages to see how they are directing the donations they receive - positively or negatively toward any group. The designations for every page will change during the week:
    • SI ASB Page - Negative toward the faculty, staff, and Ph.D. students all week
    • Monday & Tuesday - team member choice (positive)
    • Wednesday and Thursday - team member choice (negative)
    • Friday - free for all!
  • Spread the word and get others to participate! Follow end of day tallies.
